What I Did?

Memo AR mobile application is a new social interaction app that allows users to visually express their thoughts, feelings and share with others. It opens up a new possibility for enhanced social interaction.

Objectives

Provide excitement and accomplishment to users

Provide new, improved AR integrated experience to users

Change a user’s traditional mental model of perceiving instantly consumed messages with a new mental model of cherishing and deeply enfacing with virtual messages

AR Technique Summary

Real-world environment (AR technology can use the camera of a smart device to recognize & measure the physical dimension of a real-world environment)

Real-time rendering (AR technology supports 3D model real-time rendering. Users can change the color, material, and finish of selected 3D models)

AR interaction (Users can do interaction: move, rotate, animation, etc) on selected 3D models via AR technology.

INTRODUCTION

Introduction| Concept Background

What makes a moment unique and memorable? Memo is a mobile augmented reality product that allows users to visually express their thoughts and feelings and share with others. It opens up a new possibility for enhanced social interaction, allowing users to leave their creative message in the 3D world. Through this project, I tried to explore how can we help people capture and create their own special moments with more involvement & engagements with other people. I executed a human-centered design process throughout the 7 weeks period to find a design solution that can help users to enhance people’s daily experience of communicating their special moments.

"Life is not measured by time. It is measured by moments".

RESEARCH

Where did I start?

I conducted a multi-methodology research effort to a better understanding of how people to define their special moments and how they wish to document/present them. In addition to how researchers explored these questions in their relative fields of study in their academic areas.

Primary & Secondary Research

- Contextual Inquiry/Observation

- User Interview-

- Literature Review

- Public ESM data

"When we establish human connections within the context of shared experience we create community wherever we go.”

― Gina Greenlee

CORE DIRECTIONS

Core Directions

A. What makes a moment unique, exciting and enjoyable?

Methodologies: User interview, contextual inquiry/observation

B. Why people capture and share their life meaningful/remarkable moments with other people?

Methodologies: User interview,  literature review

C. How do people expect the message to be shared with other people?/ How do people share their moments with other people?

Methodology: public ESM data

DIRECTION A

A meaningful moment motivates people to capture and share with others. By this card-sorting exercise, I wanted to know what kinds of factors will influence a unique/meaningful moment. It helps me to understand what kinds of components are prioritized over the other in a given moment.

Trend of nowadays

A document experience of image/interaction-driven message shifts from memory tool to a communication tool. It’s a way for the younger generation to promote their identity and enforce stronger social connections with peers.

"

DIRECTION B

B. Why people capture and share their life meaningful/remarkable moments with other people?

Psychological motivations behind sharing life moments

People may like to take photos/capture moments and post them online because they like other people’s likes, shares and positive comments to increase their feelings of self-esteem/worth.

"The acts of self-disclosure lights up areas of the brain which are also activated by known pleasurable activities.”

Younger generations tend to use photos taken of them as a means of communication.” ish human connections within the context of shared experience we create community wherever we go. Even though photography may still capitalize on its primary function as a memory tool for documenting a person’s past, we are witnessing a significant shift, especially among the younger generation, toward using it as an instrument for interaction and peer bonding”

― Jose Van Dijck

DIRECTION C

C. How do people expect the message to be shared with other people?

In order to understand people's current behavior in sharing and capturing their delightful moments, I analyzed public ESM data from public Instagram posts.

I used Python script to scape about 5000+public posts then conducted a report with randomly chosen 1500 posts.
